Wisky Sports Report: Vol. 1
Welcome to a brand new feature here as we continue to expand our coverage of ALL things Badgers Athletics. In the Wisky Sports Report we will take a look at what has been going on in the sports that don't get a ton of coverage, such as Soccer, Golf, Volleyball, Rowing, etc. for both men's and women's sports. We hope you enjoy the coverage of these sports throughout the year and we'll be bringing this to you every Tuesday as well.
Let's start things off with a look at the Wisconsin Men's Soccer Program, shall we? They only had one game this past weekend, on the 25th against Loyola Marymount, which they won 2-1. That win stretches their unbeaten streak to 3 games and was also the programs 1st Sunday win of the 2011 season. Goals came courtesy of junior Tomislav Zastrow(1st half) and freshman David Caban(86:15min mark) as the Badgers pulled out the victory a mear three minutes, fifteen seconds from the end of regulation. Wisconsin improves their season record to 4-3-1 overall on the year. This will be a bit of busy week ahead as the Badgers play host to in state rival Marquette on Wednesday and then play host to their 1st B1G game of the year against perennial power Indiana on Oct. 2nd
The Women's soccer team has already entered B1G play as they traveled to Michigan State and Michigan last weekend. It was a successful trip as Wisconsin beat MSU 2-1 on Friday, with both goals by freshman Cara Walls(assisted by Lindsey Johnson, Catie Sessions, and Laurie Nosbuch). That victory snapped the Spartans 8 game win streak as well. Sunday's game against Michigan saw the Badgers and Wolverines go scoreless through overtime to earn a 0-0 draw. That allowed the Badgers to start B1G play 2-0-1 for the 2nd straight year and pushes their overall record to 7-3-1. Coming up this weekend are a pair of home games against arch rival Minnesota(Friday) and Ohio State(Sunday) as they continue the B1G season.
Volleyball has been off to a decent start to their 2011 campaign and started the brutal B1G conference slate with a split home weekend, beating Northwestern 3-0 (25-23, 25-21, and 25-22) on Friday and then dropping their match against #3 Illinois 0-3 (18-25, 17-25, and 22-25). With that victory the Illini actually moved up to #1 in the national polls. Overall for the year the Badgers sit 9-5 and face a brutal road trip to #5 Penn State and #25 Ohio State this weekend.
The Golf teams were both in action this past weekend with the men sitting in 5th place after 1 round in the Louisville Intercollegiate, which is completing it's final round as we speak. Bucky is lead by Anthony Aicher who's sitting 2 strokes behind the leader after shooting a team best 69 on Saturday. The women won their 2nd straight Badgers Invitational, besting 2nd place SMU by 10 strokes overall for the tournament. The ladies won't be back in action until Oct. 10th at the Lady Northern in French Lick, IN. Ya, the home of Larry Bird and the site for this seasons B1G Championship in the spring.
Overall this program is showing a lot of growth and is a ton of fun to watch no matter the sport. Get out over the weekend and support the athletes that are working so hard! We hope to see you at as many of these events as possible and until then... ON WISCONSIN!
