It's been awhile since we last put up a Wisky Sports Report, but it's nearly Finals time and as a result we'd like to bring it back until the January window for many of the "non-revenue" sports. So, let's take a look at the sports that we don't separately cover in Wrestling and Men's and Women's Swimming.
The wrestling team sits at 5-2 on the season, but has only taken down 2 Division I opponents in Princeton and Rider. So far the top wrestler on the season is Ben Jordan who is ranked #14 in the 165lbs. weight class and has an 11-3 record so far this season. There is only one other ranked wrestler on the Badgers roster and that's redshirt Junior Cole Schmitt who is ranked #17 (by Amateur Wrestling News) and holds an undefeated dual record of 6-0 on the season.
Unfortunately in this last weekends dual at #9 Michigan the Badgers dropped their first Big Ten match up of the season, 21-12. They lead 12-8 at one point, but would be shut out after that, giving up the final 4 matches all by major decision or decision.
The wrestling team takes a break until the end of December before heading to Evanston for one of the biggest tournaments in all of wrestling, The Midland Duals, which takes place on Dec. 29th & 30th. Wisconsin will finally have a home dual on Jan. 8th vs. Northwestern as well, so look for coverage of those events in our next Wisky Sports Report.
Over at the Natatorium the Men's and Women's swimming and diving teams aren't having the best of seasons as they adjust to a brand new coach and try to rebuild to a stronger program. The men sit at 1-5 overall and in their last event, the Texas Invite (Dec. 3rd - 5th), the Badgers finished 7th with 190 points. The one win so far this season for the men is a 152-126 victory at Arizona State.
The Women's team isn't much better having a 2-4 record overall and is 1-2 in conference meets this season. The team finished 6th at the SMU Classic in late October and it's most recent competition at the Texas Invite they placed 5th. That was the last appearance of the 2011 calendar year as both the Men's and Women's teams will travel to Hawi'i on Jan. 7th for a dual meet on the Men's side and a meet against the Warriors and Boise State on the Women's side of things.
