We're up to the next to last day in our The 12 Days of Recruits Series here at WiscoBadgers.com. As we wind down we have yet to profile two would be Badgers offensive lineman. Today we'll be taking a look at the least solid commit in this class, one Kyle Dodson.
I say least solid because after the hire of Urban Meyer at Ohio State he basically reopened his recruiting process by taking visits to Auburn and USC. He may also take visits to fellow Big Ten schools Michigan and Michigan State. So, what makes him so coveted in this class?
Kyle Dodson Personal Stats:
Hometown/High School: Cleveland, OH/Cleveland Heights
Commit date: 6/13/11 *considered soft verbal now
247sports: 4*, #208 (nationally), #24 (position), #10 (state)
Rivals: 4*, #174 (nationally), #20 (position), #10 (state)
Scout: 4*, #25 (position) - they don't give out national or state based rankings.
Man was this a huge get in the middle of June. Out muscling Ohio State for one of the best recruits in the state of Ohio was massive to say the least. Fast forward just 6 months and his verbal commitment to Wisconsin is just that, in name only.
I included him in this series because as of this date he still says he's commited to Wisconsin and it's entirely possible that is the case and he's just conflicted and weighing his options. In speaking to sources that have spoken to Kyle throughout the process it was clear his heart was at Wisconsin but his grandmother, who raised him, wanted him closer to home and thus Ohio State.
Enter the hire of Urban Meyer into the mix and you've got one heck of a run at this kid. I'm not sure we can really count on him to be a Badger commit for much longer. The one thing going for the Badgers is having Vince Biegel and Dan Voltz both at the U.S. Army All-American Bowl where Dodson will also be at. I'm sure they'll be doing there best to keep tOSU guys away from him that week that's for sure.
On the field he's probably one of the most talented recruits at OL that we've ever seen commit to the Badgers. He's got the technique and drive to play nearly from the get go. With Olgesby graduating there is going to be somewhat of an open competition at the RT spot. Although with his size and athletic ability I see him as more of a LT option in the future.
He clearly has a nasty streak to him and isn't afraid to use his hands and his feet to gain the advantage in the pass rushing game. As for run blocking, well folks there's a reason why Wisconsin is after this kid. He's just a "Wisconsin" type player. He plays downhill and for a tackle does a great job of sealing off the lanes and getting to the next level when needed.
With what's in front of him in Ricky Wagner and Rob Havenstein I would be hard pressed to see him starting right out of the gate in 2012 as it is.
In the end though I think Grandma and Urban Meyer might win out in this one. Color me shocked if the Badgers hang on to Dodson in the end. It would be a very pleasant treat on signing day, that's for sure!
This is an extended highlight film of Dodson in his Junior season. He's #66 if you can't figure that out from the title of the video and there is no sound, so totally safe for the office ;)
