The Bobbie Kelsey era got off ot an interesting start as they travled to Milwaukee to kick off the season against the Panthers. Starting the season off against an in state rival on the road is not the normal way to do things, but the results have to be encouraging, coming away with a 68-51 victory. This wiin will be memorable as it's the 1st for Kelsey as a head coach and what we can only hope is one of many victories under Kelsey's leadership.
Things weren't as easy as the final score would indicate though, as Bucky was only up 6 (28-22), at the half. Wisconsin would kick things into high gear in the 2nd half however, pulling away by scoring 40 points and only giving up 29. For the game the Badgers had 4 of their 5 starters reach double figures. Leading that crowd was guard Taylor Wurtz with a double double (17 points, 14 rebounds). Senior forward Anya Covington had a well rounded game, scoring 12 points and pulling down 8 boards, both second on the team. Wisconsin held a +24 rebounding margin over Milwaukee and were lead on the glass by Wurtz's 14 boards.
For the game Wisconsin did a great job defensively, holding Milwaukee to 37.5% field goal shooting on the night. The Panthers certainly didn't help their cause either, shooting a poor 45.5% from the free throw line.
Kelsey's crew will take their 1-0 record back to Madison and put it on the line against Oral Roberts (1-0) on Sunday at 2pm in the Kohl Center for their next tilt.
